Single and Thirty = 5 Dating Don'ts

“Why is it there are so many unmarried women in their thirties these days, Bridget?”

“Well, I don't.  Suppose it doesn't help that underneath our clothes our entire bodies are covered in scales.”

-      Bridget Jones

While taking relationship advice from a 31 year old single woman may not be ideal.  Taking what not to in relationships is probably a good idea.

1)      Know your limit, play within it.

(1)

Did you know

“the human spinal cord, part of the central nervous system, is generally around 17 inches long, and extends from the brain to the lower back.

Your spinal cord is protected by the vertebral column (also known as the spinal column or backbone).

The human spinal column is made up of 33 bones - 7 vertebrae in the cervical region, 12 in the thoracic region, 5 in the lumbar region, 5 in the sacral region and 4 in the coccygeal region.” (2)

What an amazing part of the human body, that often gets forgotten when we enter into relationships.  I have often lost myself when with the men of my life, I either agree with them on topics I strongly do not agree with, go with their future plans (kids in the country) when I dream of the opposite.  It is very hard to remember your own guns when you are busy sticking to someone else’s.  The hard part is that once you lose footing of your own dreams your whole life can become complex and unsatisfying and you may not even know why.  The important thing is that you must stick to your beliefs and your dreams, and most importantly remember not to sacrifice your morals.  I will share with you one of my very low points in my dating career.  I was with Mr. AA, we had a fight over who knows what now, he went out to the pub and home alone, or so I thought.  The following morning I felt bad about our argument so I dressed in his favorite color and went to his house to take him for breakfast, only to find another woman in his bed.  The low part is that I stayed with him.  He had taken my self-confidence and so when he told me that the other women meant nothing to him, I was in a position where I believed that this made me special.  Newsflash past self! It actually means that you were totally lost in a terrible relationship.  See, I lost my respect for myself and self-love, and in return of course your partner loses those things for you.  Thus he feeds you complete bullshit like the lines I stated above.  RESPECT yourself! Know your worth.  Set up your limits and do not let anyone take them away from you.  The second you loosen your grip on your own moral code you are susceptible to not only feeling lost and shitty but also for others to lose respect for you.   This pattern I repeated in my past relationships because I was truly out of sync with my ambitions.  I would move to a new city with Mr. X and think that everything would work out because at least I was in love.  Let me tell you what I have come to realize is : you need more than just love in your life.  If your dreams and self-esteem are taking a beating than you need to reprioritize yourself and change something so that you are back on track with what is the best future for you.  Never again will I sacrifice my dreams or integrity for anyone.  I strongly suggest you do the same.

2)      Play nice with others.

(3)

So perhaps he has the worst sister in the world.  In fact just to think of her makes your skin crawl because she is truly that awful.  Here is what you need to do.  Suck it up buttercup.  It is his sister and there is no getting rid of her, unfortunately.  Or perhaps it is his shallow aunt with the tummy tuck, or his mom with her Opera book club advice, or his friends are truly rednecks that are slightly racist and mostly alcoholics, or whatever it is that you loath in your face as his not so wonderful social circle.  This is the only case where I would counter my suggestion of number 1, if you are lucky his family will not live next door and you can escape them.  So play nice, with his friends, play nice with his family it only makes life easier. In fact according to the “Why Men Marry Some Women and Not Others” 35 percent of marriages occur because of family pressure/approval.  In fact according to the same literature over 80 percent of men bragged about their fiancĂ©e being someone that they could proudly introduce to their family and friends.    So if you want your man to be happy, NEVER make him chose between his family (or friends) and you because that is just down right awkward.  For example if he chooses you and then a year from now you are still together, you know he is going to want to see his family and friends, come on it is an impossible battle, in particular if he is close to his family.  But with this said, if his family is cruel or unusual to you and he stands back and does not stand up for you, then he is a douche.  There is nothing worse than a man who does not stand by his woman. But these are five tid-bits for you to avoid not tid-bits on identifying douchery.   Furthermore, behind closed doors if you are rude to his friends (and family) you know that they are staging a full force attack on you.  I have seen this done behind the evil girlfriends back many times by men.  If you burn the bridge which is your man’s friend kingdom, they will plot their revenge against you, and it may not be subtle.  If you cannot stand your man’s friends than just separate yourself from them, but never try and take a man from his friends (we discussed this in a previous blog) it is grounds for war.

(4)
3)      Jealousy is ugly.

Kick jealosy to the curb.  It is not healthy.  It is toxic on two levels, first it is toxic if you are crazy jealous.  I will admit, I have for sure been crazy jealous.  We all have had our issues, but the second you realize you should not have to check your man’s phone or email because you will not find anything on there, the better.  I have found several incriminating texts and emails in the past; hence I went a bit crazy for a while.  But that was then and this is now.  I just realized something, jealousy is useless.   If you are acting jealous remember that it has the reverse effect you are going for as it only drives your man away.  It also creates insane behaviour that seems justified but should really be avoided at all cost.  Be confident in your relationship and have a little faith in yourself that you are the only one for the person you are in relationship with.  Beyond how awful jealousy makes you both feel it is also a huge cause of disillusionment, prior to your jealous outbreaks you were most likely appearing very sexy and confident, but once that jealousy comes out, well, let’s just say it is needy and unappealing.  If your partner makes you feel jealous, by oh let’s say inappropriately groping your friends or coming onto other women in front of you, then this is actually a sign of douchery.  This is actually not jealousy if you notice this, it is a huge sign of disrespect and you should probably dump this jerk before he cheats on you with one of the millions of women he outwardly flirts with.

Always, check your jealousy monitor though, I often ask my friends “Do you think that was inappropriate, or am I just being crazy?” The trick is to ask your true friends; the ones that will full on tell you that you are being a lunatic.  If you have a unanimous consensus and your feelings that something is not right than figure out a plan of action.  On the flip side if you are with a man who is insanely jealous, than this is just a toxic, in particular if he tries to control you.  This can actually become a form of abuse, at first I thought jealousy with Mr. AA was a sign that he cared about me more deeply than anyone, but after a while I realized it was a way to control me completely.  Jealousy can be a terrible tool of manipulation, so basically do not give or take anything to do with it.  Lastly, if you are trying to get attention by making your man jealous than you need to seriously reconsider what kind of attention you want.  I once went on a date with a man who told me that men earn jealousy, if they are good men to their women than they have the right to tell them what to do. RED FLAG!

 4)      Be Financially Independent

(5)

Oh it is so easy to have things bought for you and to fall into the pattern of the man taking care of you.  Unfortunately this leaves you incredibly vulnerable to become completely financially dependent on your man.  This may seem totally fine if you are in a stable relationship, but let me tell you, it is not.  How can you respect yourself as a woman if you are not able to support yourself?  (I have heard women say they are stay at home mothers, this is a very different story of course and is not considered in this section because it is too foreign to me and complicated.)  If you are physically able to work and do not because you enjoy being a gold digger than I feel sorry for you.  There is nothing in life more satisfying than supporting yourself and not being dependent on a man for anything!  Also, being dependent on your man for money opens the flood gates for him to criticize you for spending his money and for fights about money.  Life is easier when you have your own money.  In the opposite of this regard, if you are supporting your man than that is also ludicrous! What kind of man cannot support himself?  No man that any decent woman should be with.  Be completely financially stable on your own and then find a man who can keep up or vice versa.  Of course, there are some instances that men should offer to pay your birthday, first date, Valentine’s Day, etc.  But always keep your finances ready to go, that way if one day he gives you a week to move out, piece of cake, you hire your movers and go, no skin off your back.  Financial independence is freedom.

5)       Ch-ch-changes!

(6)

David Bowie was right in his lyrics that time can change us but we cannot change time. Another thing that we cannot change is other people. Some of you may be reading this and thinking that is not true that you have changed a lot or someone else has. Of course everyone has the ability to change themselves, but you do not have it. But, here is the situation that makes me write this, none of my exes changed the behaviour that really bothered me even though I talked, nagged, pleaded, fought, etc. until I was blue in the face for them to change. Also, Ms. K has had the same fights over the same things with the same man for almost two years. See if you are in love with some parts of your partner and your relationship BUT really want to change other parts of the person you are with than you should probably move on. There is no changing a man who does not want to change. But I have already blogged about this topic at length. So that is all my dating DON’T knowledge to pass on to you.

In my unsuccessful dating life I have learned that online dating is just like real life dating. The only difference is that you meet online, and for some reason that makes men more sexually deviant. I had another wild experience where a stranger wanted to talk at length about my fantasies, like those are just given away for free to random men, nope. So, I have two more ODEs to share:

ODE 3: ODE 3 is actually very good looking, we met for coffee, then walked to check on a movie time the Scotia Theater to watch the new Oz movie in 3D, the conversation was easy, he was funny and nice, we went for dinner and a movie, he walked me to the Seabus, ended with somewhat awkward hug. Here is the thing; he sent me a message saying he had an awesome time and that we would hang out the following day. That was supposed to be Saturday and I have yet to hear from him, so I am guessing that he is not interested.   This actually is one of my pet peeves of dating.  I always send a brief message or phone call, or fax (Ms. J that one’s for you), or you know anything that kindly says you are great but the chemistry just is not, so when men cannot do the same it irks me.

With that said in real life, there was someone I met a while ago that I was also looking forward to seeing this week, and he texted me he did not have time for new friendships.

Rejection sucks, but it is part of the dating game.  You cannot have rejection without trying.

ODE 4: ODE 4 is also very handsome. He is a Croatian masseuse, so he has a sexy accent and who does not love a good masseuse, he gave me a mini shoulder rub and hand rub while we enjoyed some mojitos. I am not sure what is going to happen with ODE 4 as we are texting and have a second date. There is one small quirk of his that I did not find endearing. He always says “Oh boy” in places where most people would say something like “That is crazy” or  ‘Wow”or “No way” It is a bit of a PG 13 saying that sounds so unfamiliar that it stood out. But besides this quirk, there were no red flags. Only time will tell.

I have decided to try at least ten ODEs before I determine my final verdict on this way of meeting men. In real life it is still very easy to meet men, they are everywhere and friendly so I guess I am lacking in the conviction that online dating is even necessary. Also, some girlfriends of mine have decided to try speed dating....so that will be a whole new saga to blog about! Stay tuned! And thanks for reading! XO

Are All Men Sex Addicts?

“God gave men brains so they wouldn’t hump women’s legs at cocktail parties”

-          Hackers

(1)

I have to be candid, I wrote this blog two days ago and living the past few days sans encounters with men I had begun to rethink my position in this blog and thought I should write about something else.  UNTIL this morning I read a message from a guy on POF that I had messaged possibly five times that would make a seasoned prostitute blush, so here it is:

In my dating experiments or experiences whatever you would like to call them I have noticed that men really are sexual creatures.  The amazing thing is the older they get the creepier they become while at the same time the older they get the more impotent they become, strange correlation.  I have truly noticed this lately as I venture out on more dates and have more run ins with the opposite sex that SEX is on their brain pretty much all the time.  Here is a perfect example I am texting with a guy who texted me out of the blue, we have no history, we just met through friends one night a long time ago, texted a tiny bit after and then nothing came of it.  Anyways, out of the blue he texts me and we are chatting and I mention something about getting around from where he lives must be hard.  He texts back “I am hard” Hmmmm, I am all for some fun dirty sexting but really? Not with some random stranger and not in such an odd manner, there was no easing into it; there was no testing the water to see if it is welcoming. But then I am continuing on with life from that point and I meet some more guys who just throw sex out there and I mean THROW it.  They simply ask if I want to have sex, if I want to send them dirty pictures, what I like about sex.  I am beginning to think the only man I can have a conversation that is not about sex is Mr. Suit, and the only reason he does not talk about it is because he never wants to have it with me, which we have both made clear to one another a long time ago.

(2)

So I became curious if men really do think about sex as often as they express they do, which according to my current attempts at conversation with the opposite sex is about every second text. What is interesting is that “ A study from an Ohio State University shows that the real number is more like every 4,275 seconds, or about once an hour—not so different from how often women in the study thought about sex (about once every two hours). Men in the study were also more likely than women to think about other physical desires, including sleep and eating.”(3)  So if men are not overly thinking about sex all the time than why am I hearing about it? Well the answer is simply: “men were more likely than women to report thinking about sex simply because it’s such a common and accepted stereotype about them. Sure enough, the study found that gender had less to do with how often people thought about sex than whether they felt positive about sex in general. In other words, the more positively men and women felt about sex, the more they thought about it.” (4) Ah ha! Mystery solved.  Men are just more open about their desires than women...but, there must be something more.  I once asked my male friend why men asked women such crude questions that they pretty much knew would get a no answer.  He laughed and said “Well it is a 50 – 50 chance, either yes or no.  I mean ya they are probably going to say no but you will never know they might have said yes unless you ask.” Fascinating that men do not fear (from what I understand frequent) rejection from the opposite sex, it is as though they have begun to accept it as part of their daily routine.

It is this mentality:

Why do animals hunt prey?

Why do birds fly?

Why did everybody and their grandmother go see New Moon on opening weekend?

Some things are just natural. Men love sex. And what's not to love. There is so much T&A walking around at any given time, moving to and fro with every swaying step. In America especially, daily life is a constant reminder that sex exists and that if you're watching TV, you aren't having it.

Plus, men have this whole conquering mentality. There are a solid 3 billion women on this planet, of which about 2,999,999,999 don't really want to sleep with us, but the truth is, we don't accept that. There's a possibility that all women want to sleep with us so we have the opportunity for sex all the time.

Plus, sex is fun. It can be messy and sometimes come with unintended consequences, but that doesn't stop sex from the being the best release out there on the market.

But whoa there, Nelly. Women want sex all the time too! That's why relationships are so popular. That way women can get all the sex they want without having to worry about being labeled as a slore. Sex is great for the spirit and the mind.

Sex is responsible for wars and is responsible for peace. You can't push the button if you're "pushing the button".

In short, men want sex all the time because, really, what else is there?” (5)

Then I realized I was thinking about this situation ALL THE WRONG WAY! I was thinking what is it about men that make them so horny, but what I really should have been asking is what is the difference between women and men that makes me feel this way.  Sorry for playing the blame game there guys! “The underlying meaning is that men possess a much more simplistic sex drive than women, one that responds to exclusively visual cues. Meanwhile, women analyze complex behavioral cues to get in the mood.

Even researchers tend to agree with the image. A recent book, ‘A Billion Wicked Thoughts,’ analyzed millions of websites, erotic videos and sexual searches, and the writers concluded that men and women had far different ways of becoming aroused.

‘The male sexual brain is like a single toggle switch, whereas the female sexual brain is like the cockpit of an F1 fighter jet," Gaddam says, the news source reports. "There are tons of dials and instruments, and there's sophisticated calibration going on.’”(6)

The mentality is the difference that I think is the issue that I am running into. There is no coy banter building up to interest. In fact there are in some cases one message of hello before an attack of intense sexual advances from men. But, once understanding the concepts put forth in regards to the male and female mental arousal elements it becomes evident to me that is my problem. I am looking for the mental synchronization with a man, the common ground that is only built once one truly gets to know their opponent in the arena of bedroom games. So it is not that men are sex crazed aggressors but that they are on a different level of timing. They are instantly turned on it would appear and more visual. It is like coffee for example a man is instant, he looks at you, he likes what he sees, he’s horny he puts it out there, bam cup of joe. While women are more like a cappuccino there is a thought of a tasty cappuccino, there is preparation in the making, there is the making of the cappuccino, which takes time and effort, there is also the presentation of the cappuccino. All of which factor into the satisfaction, thus women and men are in two different playing fields once again. Please do not read this and think all men want to have whatever kind of sex with whatever kind of women all the time. That is NOT what I am saying, what I am saying is that once men have decided they want sex from a woman of their standards, which can be ridiculously high, they are more vocal and persistent. I am also not saying that any old sex will do for these men, quite the opposite, I have heard many men complain about the quality of sex they have had, but oddly enough never the quantity. I am not saying I am not flattered by the proposition and I am never assuming all men are going to be the same way, it is just after conversation, after conversation about the same thing and the same words it is exhausting.  You know what would be my biggest turn on right now?  A decent conversation.   But, I have to admit; even with the sexual advances dating is a lot of fun!

(7)

Carrying on with the theme of last week I was curious what dating sites would be considered the best sites.  According to 2013 ratings the following order of online dating sites 1) match.com 2) zoosk.com 3) ourtime.com 4) eharmony.com and 5 chemistry.com.  Interesting, this week my girlfriend suggested I try eharmony for this online dating experience and I noticed no ranking system recognizes Plenty of Fish or OkayCupid.  Hmmm, time to strategize.  So I have decided to take on this online dating experience by trying different sites and seeing what they offer.

So this week I have been on dates with men from online dating.  We shall call them Online Dating Experiences (ODE) and the number after to keep track of them.

ODE 1: In order to accurately understand the world of online dating I have also signed up on OkayCupid, which from chatting with men appears to be a much better site than POF just from the level of effort men put into their messages, but that is beside the point.  On OKCupid I wrote that I love the TV program Law and Order (which I actually really do) anyways….ODE 1 wrote me about Law and Order, this is the second time in my life I have had a conversation with a man about my favorite TV program, our conversation was followed by a conversation about literature.  It seemed to be going so well.  On his profile he looks like a handsome 38 year old electrician.  So ODE 1 and I decide to meet for a latte last weekend, Friday to be precise.  Unfortunately ODE 1 is not very attractive in person, racist, unemployed, lives with his mother, plays video games religiously, aspires to be a polygamous, oh did I mention racist? The worst part about his racism is that he said “Oh well I am German” Uuuuuuummmmm Excuse me? I AM GERMAN!! And you do not see me prancing around the streets of Vancouver being ignorant because being German has nothing to do with being a racist.  First of all, German people are not all racist.   Secondly, racism is not a genetic trait.   Furthermore, ODE 1 really wants to have a farm, ugh, a farm? I am a city girl.  I LOVE my city, I love living on a garbage route, I love buying things easily, I love socializing, I love, love, love the city life.  I have tried the farm life and let me tell you; while I also adore the farmer’s market I have no aspirations to be a farmer.  So, needless to say ODE 1 is not going to be in my future dating world for so many good reasons. RED FLAG!!!

(8)

What I did notice with ODE 1 is the more you say no to men, the more persistent they become, for example he asked me for pictures of the X rated type before we even met.  I had to laugh and then say “I am never going to send pictures to a stranger I met on the internet.”

Internet Dating Rule 1: Never send dirty pictures to strangers that you have just met online.

But, my answer did not seem to persuade him at all, he just keeps on asking, in fact he is still asking for them.  Get over it bud.  ODE 1 and I met at coffee shop that is about ten blocks from my house, and it was pouring rain this Friday and after our date he did not offer to drive me home, while I would not have let him drive me home it is still rude not to offer a woman a life in torrential down pour.

Internet Dating Rule 2: Never tell strangers from the internet where you live.

Which brings us to ODE 2: ODE 2 was actually an amazing date! He asked me to go to Spa Utopia at 5pm on Friday and that he would meet me there at 6.  So I went to the spa and had a MUCH NEEDED manicure treatment, followed by at 6 pm ODE 2 met me and we had joint pedicures together.  What a GREAT date idea! I loved it! However, did not eat very much before we met up and the aesthetician offered me some wine while doing my nails so I am going to be honest I got a bit drunk.

Internet Dating Rule 3: Never get drunk on the first date.

(Rules are made to be broken right?) So then after our spa treatment we went to his hotel room (do not worry nothing happened physically) we enjoyed some wine with fruit and chocolate and just chatted.

Internet Dating Rule 4: Never sleep with a stranger from an online dating site.

(This rule will never be broken)

We then went for dinner at a nice restaurant, the food was incredible! ODE 2 was very respectful and looked just like his pictures.  After dinner we went to his friend’s birthday at a club downtown.  This is where something strange happened.  I went outside for some fresh air….fine I went outside for a cigarette, I am trying to quit but all the wine did me in.  So I was outside having air and an incredibly HOT man approached me to share my fresh air.  Our conversation went like this:

Him: “Hey, Are you at Library Square”

Me: “Yes”

“Oh, I am headed to the Cambie”

(I laughed) “I see you’re a Cambie man”

It is at this point I noticed a pod of hot men across the road yelling at him so I said.

“Are those your friends?”

To which he replied: “No, no they do not matter, how is your night going?”

We had about two seconds of more small talk and then the pod of hot men appeared more frantic and started waving their arms and yelling and I said “Are you sure those are not your friends?” He looked at them and then yelled “CAN YOU PLEASE JUST GIVE ME A MINUTE!”

Then he pulled out his phone and said “Look I unfortunately have to go but I would really like to call you sometime, my name is ______” To which I said my name and he asked for my number.  Did I mention he was gorgeous? So I gave it to him of course because it is not everyday a stunning man approaches me on the street, unfortunately. At this point in time his friend had walked away so off he ran.

(9)

Back to ODE 2.  ODE 2 then announced he would like to go somewhere a little more intimate so we could chat to which I said okay so we went to a lounge that I had been to with Mr. Elevator.   There are always those few seconds when you go into a place that you have been with a past flame and you pray to whatever god you believe in that he will not be there.  Do not worry, he was not there! Whew! So ODE 2 and I had two drinks and chatted.  ODE 2 said he believes in bringing the art of dating back, he said dating is lost with men these days, which I mostly agree with.  Interestingly, ODE 2 also writes a blog! His blog is a blog to help men meet and date women in a respectful way.  After our last drink he walked me over to the Seabus terminal where I bought my ticket and said goodbye.  After ODE 2 left the terminal station I went to A and W and bought a large French fries.  This is often my routine when inebriated.  So, I walked to the Seabus eating French fries and content with my ODE stories.  While ODE 2 is very kind and respectful, the chemistry is just lacking.  Also, ODE 2 and I walked by the hotel that Mr. Yukon and I stayed at, well first we walked by the large stone pillar where Mr. Yukon finally made his move, pulling me in behind it and pushing me up against the pillar he kissed me and held my face.  It was a moment I may never forget.  The moment that seed was planted I could not shake it; my date was just going through the motions.  I texted Mr. Yukon and told him, to which he responded “Yes, that is when you finally gave in to my charms” True. But, that was so long ago now, weeks have turned into months.

Once I stumbled home, somewhat covered in ketchup to be honest, my phone rang.  And who could it be on the other line but the gorgeous man from the street, let us call him Gorgeous George (GG). So GG was on the other end.  He was chatting away telling me his friends had actually left him on the street and caught a cab when he got distracted by me.  I laughed and we chatted a bit more and then we got disconnected.  To which he texted he would call me back, but sadly did not.  Oh well.  I shall never complain about drunken random phone calls from sexy men, never. So this week has been very eventful! I wanted to go on one more ODEs to share in this blog but just have not found the time.   Still having a blast with this dating thing! Will keep you posted on any new, and hopefully better dating experiences in my near future! XOXO

To Date, Or Not To Date? Online That Is....

“Online dating is now like eating at Denny's thanks to Photoshop, in person your order looks nothing like the photo on the menu.” - Unknown.

Recently I have been noticing people with their online dating interests and it is another fascinating social phenomena that I have decided to explore, if for nothing else this blog.  Basically what intrigues me about online dating is first of all it is window shopping.  You get to pick and choose whoever you might fancy based on your attraction to their photos.  While I feel there is a warning here as Ms. J once told me about the popular dating site Plenty of Fish (POF) “Take the ugliest picture of them on there and times it by a million in ugliness and that is what they actually look like” So! Once you have a very poor concept of them physically then you will for sure not be disappointed when they turn out not half bad.  In August when I first moved here I went out with a few men from POF but they were duds, their looks were not half bad but there were just no spark so after I think it was possibly three dates I went off of it.  But, this week I thought I would give it a go again (from chatting with my other single POF ladies they to do this trend of going on, going off, etc.) Which brings me to my second intrigue about the online world of dating, anonymity.  You can be anyone you want to be! Actually COINCIDENTALLY enough while I was on there I actually saw a picture of a sexy male model that I had used in my blog, as a profile pic.  It was clearly not the same man in the sequence of photos and the picture was a professional model so this imposter had stolen said model’s sexy body and face, along with several other male models.  It is a virtual reality where you write your own character, and if you are satisfied with just an online world you can live there as whomever you wish to be.

Here are some great statistics to get across the point of how popular online dating has become:

Total number of single people in the U.S.
54 Million
Total number of people in the U.S. who have tried online dating
40 Million
Total eHarmony members
20 Million
Total Match.com members
15 Million
Number of questions to fill out on eHarmony survey
400
Annual revenue from the online dating industry
$1.049 Billion
Average spent by dating site customer per year
$239
Average length of courtship for marriages that met online
18.5 Months
Average length of courtship for marriages that met offline
42 Months
Percent of users who leave within the first 3 months
10 %
Percent of male online dating users
52.4 %
Percent of female online dating users
47.6 %
(Reference 2 below)

In this fantasy world you can also ask for things you may never ask for without the cloak of anonymity.  For example I had a man ask me for a picture of my feet.  Feet, something I do not think are pretty or nice to look at, but to someone else they are more erotic than I will ever understand.  So, while eating some potato chips and watching Netflix I took a picture of my clammy little foot and sent it.  Why not? It is not anything I would ever be embarrassed of if I saw it posted on the internet, and trust me I have been asked for A LOT worse by men that claim to respect me.  Here is the thing, once I sent it there was a very kind thank you, followed by compliments that were NOT of the sexual nature and an “I would love to rub your feet”  YES! I would love for someone to rub my feet on the regular.  That would be amazing.  After working ten hour days in tight, fashionable shoes, do you know what I do? I commute home and soak my feet in my little soaker foot bath for an hour with Epson salts.  I LOVE pedicures.  When I told my girlfriends about this online experience they said they are totally grossed out by foot fetishes.  Agree to disagree here ladies.

Another wonderful side to this online dating gig is that rejection is much easier to take.  There is no awkward humiliating moment when as Jenna Marbles says women say “Ew, go away” No, no.  There is simply a non-response or if they do respond, who cares? They are some stranger on the internet, you will never see them.  So you chat and chat and chat and, well you get the point.  And, this has not happened yet for me, but eventually one of you asks each other out. I know some of you may be thinking it would be so strange to date a stranger off the internet.  Let me tell you it is STRANGE to date anyways.  Dating is always going to be a bit strange, a bit unfamiliar, and a bit awkward until you find your bearings it is just the way getting to know someone works.  And, as my dear friend Ms. M pointed out, “always meet in public places they might be serial killers” I know Ms. K would have the same endearing advice as she has for everything to be careful and Ms. A would just laugh and laugh and then tell me to tell her all about it.

In my week of being on online dating I have come to see that an interesting aspect of it is that there is actually online chemistry.  What I mean is that you can tell within a few messages if someone gets your sense of humour or have similar interests as you.  In fact you can ask questions and tell right away so it is almost better than meeting in person. While they can create any persona they want they can also be as honest as they want.  Also, if they are truly looking to meet someone who you get along with that you have a meaningful connection than you are not going to pretend to be something that you are not.  So, in that sense if you are chatting with someone on the same level as you, who is looking to meet someone they truly get along with than they are going to be more sincere than men that are out and about just looking to hook up.  Although BE WARNED as Marie Claire has expressed EASY SEX is the number 3 reason people online date.  The other four of the five reasons were 1) they have no time, 2) They think they have no game 3) They are tired of the meat market 4) They like to categorize their options (Reference 1) . So please do not be fooled into sex with a random stranger from the interworld as you may think you have soul connection on line and then give it away too fast in person, just to get burned.

In my personal life I have not had any dates.  Mr. Elevator and I are over completely.  And, all over the other situations is a bit complicated.  However, it was through my excursion online that I realized that I do like several different types of personalities.  Also, reflecting upon my friends I have realized that I really enjoy the down to earth types who are new age and into alternative life styles so I am interested in meeting someone who can understand and not be judgemental about that way of life.  But, at the same time I find it very attractive when a man is successful and wears a business suit and has a similar career goal like myself so I also need a white collar type man.  But, at the same time I realized a lot of my friends from Small Town Nowhere are a bit red neck, they love the outdoors, drinking beers, camping, beach fires and four by fouring so I also need a little bit of that.  What is great is that through online dating I realized the different characters (unfortunately from all different men) that I want.  So, now what I need to do is prioritize those features. I do NOT want to date four men; I want to find a man who incorporates most of the above mentioned features along with my relationship needs.  I say needs because they are more than wants or desires they are what I need to be happy.

I also realized that in ending things with Mr. Elevator that I am better than what he had to offer me.  I deserve a man who wants to be with me full on and yell it from the roof tops even! I had a self-actualization this week, without men, without dating, without booze that I am worth finding someone amazing.  In fact I realized that I am a good catch, I have a good job, I am a good person, I work hard, I treat my family great and my friends, I have a good heart and I put a lot of effort into my relationships and I deserve someone who gives it their all as well.  The sad truth is until about two days ago I just was not sure I was worth it.  I felt like I was okay at life and not really that great of a catch until this week, while saying good bye to certain unwanted forces I felt incredibly empowered and it was amazing! I woke up knowing exactly what I want.  I want to date and find that person who offers me the world, and in return I will be offering them the same thing.  What an amazing journey I am about to embark on with this new clarity! I know exactly the things I want from a man finally.  On a side note there is someone who is pretty great in the works but this will all be saved for another blog.  Until next week my lovely readers say I little wish for me in my adventure to find this awesome future man.  XOXO
